The electric guitar was invented already in the 1930s. It really took off when Les Paul put his Gibson Les Paul on the market and Leo Fender came up with his Stratocaster Model in 1954. Electric guitars and the amplifiers and effects developed for those guitars broadened the range how the guitar could sound extremely.
